Our waters are rich with life, and have an abundance of juvenile and macro marine aquatics, ideal for the keen underwater photographer, or for those that just love fish!

Whales & Waves is a dive center and offers a full range of dive courses and we support responsible and sustainable diving.
We organize special trips to snorkel and free dive with whale sharks as well as custom diving to see mantas, giant trevally, turtles and other pelagics for qualified divers*.
Our objective is for you to enjoy your diving safely, explore new reefs and have the opportunity to improve your diving skills, with our experienced dive team.
For experienced divers, the North and West coast of Sumbawa provides the perfect backdrop for unchartered marine exploration and discovery. One can witness a varied range of corals and marine life, from rare nudibranchs to pelagic’s such as mantas and whale sharks. Let’s not forget the mangrove areas where there are extensive juvenile species being protected by the immersed roots of the mangrove trees. We offer custom boat packages, single dives and double tank dives. Our under water photography courses can pass part of these packages.

More common marine life includes banner fish, tangs, clownfish with anemone, moorish idols, butterfly fish, angel fish, batfish, cuttlefish, puffer fish, turtles, octopus, rays, mantis shrimps, decorated crabs, sharks, trevally, jacks, tuna. Less abundant species such as whale sharks and manta rays visit some of our dive sites at specific times in the month.
All equipment is provided for dive courses including wetsuits, regulators, mask, snorkel, fins, weights (and weight belt) and air.
Yes, for dive trips we have a range of diving equipment available for hire including dive computers but would recommend that you get in touch prior to visit to confirm size availability.
Depending on what period of the year you visit, we have a range of inshore dive sites to choose from, which include shore dives, a 34m reef which is situated 100m directly offshore from our dive centre and number mangroves. Further offshore, there are several islands (being situated in an archipelago) where there is varying reef dives and drift dives.
As a general guide you will be underwater for more than one hour and will surface with at least 50 bar for a 3 minute safety stop at 5m. The dive guide will carry out a pre-dive brief. We use buddy pairing and buddy checks.
Most dive sites are within 30 minutes by boat, no more than 3 hours end to end.
Yes, according to the level and experience of the diver or group.
These are dives whereby we take two cylinders on the boat per person — after one dive, you would have a minimum of one hour surface interval (out of water time) and then re-enter for a second dive. We would then return to shore. Depending on when these dives take place food and drink would be included.
We have an oxygen administration kit, first aid kit, mobile phone or radio, flares, survival blanket. We have GPS navigation/sonar on board too.
In the unfortunate event of an emergency exit without a safety stop we have oxygen administration and a hyperbaric chamber is available in Mataram, Lombok
